Teach debate, critical thinking and confidence, with the prep done for you.
According to Who? is a 16-week curriculum for Grades 7–9 that builds confident speakers and sharp thinkers through games, short lessons and reflection. Everything is ready to teach: open the week’s PowerPoint, follow the coaching guide, print the student pages and go. You don’t need any debate experience.
What’s included
- 16 editable PowerPoints with speaker notes
- 16 coaching guides with scripts, game instructions and answer keys
- 16 sets of printable student materials (cards, sheets and organizers), with print-ready PDFs
- A Start Here guide, your licence terms and the Poppins font files
How each session works
Every week is a 60-minute session: a warm-up game, a mini-lesson, two more games and a reflection. Most weeks include a 45-minute version, and the two scrimmage weeks include a longer-block option instead.
The 16 weeks
- Foundations (Weeks 1–4): claims, evidence, building arguments, and speaking with confidence
- CNS Format (Weeks 5–8): Canadian National Style roles, defining motions, building a constructive and a first mini-round
- Clash (Weeks 9–12): rebuttal, flowing, weighing arguments, questions and reply speeches
- Put It into Practice (Weeks 13–16): prep strategy, two scrimmages and goal-setting. Week 16 explains what a tournament day looks like for teams who choose to compete, and gives showcase and keep-growing paths for those who don’t.
Social-emotional learning in every session
Each week builds a skill such as courage, listening, teamwork, resilience or perspective-taking. Students reflect on it at the end of every session.
Built for real classrooms and clubs
- Works for classes, clubs and teams
- Anchored in Canadian National Style, with notes for Alberta (ADSA) rules
- Speech times and league rules vary, so the guides leave room for your own numbers
- Fully editable in PowerPoint and Word, and you can adjust timings, motions and examples to suit your group
